Crunk Feminist Collective: I Saw the Sign but Did We Really Need a Sign?
Colorlines: More Thoughts on Slutwalk: No Attention Is Better Than Bad Attention
I wish I could remove the photo from this reblog. Not only is the sign out of line, but there’s been a lot of people defending it saying “oh, but she means well”, “you don’t know her history”, etc. Among other issues I have with this sign, you simply cannot reclaim a slur that you have no real understanding of. That is just not how it works. It took a black woman to ask her to take her placard down, by which point the damage was done. Nobody else who saw the sign up until that point thought to take action, nobody in the foreground of this photo. The seemingly increasing homogeneity of SlutWalk is becoming a real distraction.
Not everyone sees the act of reclamation as one worthy of respect, and the act itself does not occur within a social/cultural vacuum.
This is truly the stuff microaggressions was made for.
